Complete Guide to Lip Blushing

That “just-bitten” pout we’re all chasing is easier than ever with lip blushing.

Lip blushing is a cosmetic tattoo of the lips that enhances the beauty of the natural lip color, improving the shape of the lips, and giving definition and the illusion of fullness. Using custom colors for each client, the healed result is a soft, flushed color.

How long does the procedure take? Is it a good fit for you? Keep reading to find out.

The Lip Blushing Process

Unlike traditional lipstick or lip stains, which sit on the surface of the lips and fade throughout the day, lip blushing is a cosmetic tattoo. The result? Fuller, more defined lips and a long-lasting tint.

The process begins with a consultation with your PMU artist. You’ll go over your color preferences, lip shape, and any questions you might have. Once a plan is put together, the PMU artist will outline your lips and find the shade that reaches your desired look.

Now comes the tattooing. Your PMU artist will use a special machine designed specifically for cosmetic tattooing. The use of ultra-fine needles creates a soft and natural look and allows the artist to gradually build up color and shape. A topical numbing cream is typically applied to minimize discomfort.

Expected Side Effects

Don’t freak out! Your lips will appear much darker and brighter immediately after the procedure, but that will calm down significantly. While lip blushing is generally well-tolerated, it's normal to experience some swelling, tenderness, and redness immediately following the procedure. These side effects typically subside within a few days, but it’s essential that you follow your artist’s aftercare instructions throughout the process. Here’s what we recommend for the best results.

Lip Blushing Aftercare:

  • Refrain from exercising for at least 5 days after your service.

  • Starting on day 1, please use sterile water and cotton gauze to wipe the affected area. Keep your lips moist at all times, Aquifer or A+D ointment is recommended!

  • By day 4 most of the peeling should be completed. Your lips will feel dry and chapped, keep moisturized!

  • After the scabs come off, the color will appear soft and almost ‘frosty’ looking but the color will come back little by little every day for 28 days. Keep moisturized!

  • Do not pick, peel, or scratch your scabs, and no makeup until the scabs are gone!

  • Avoid spicy foods or direct contact with foods and drinks for the next 2 days. Use a straw when drinking liquids!

Most clients require a touch-up appointment 4-6 weeks after the initial session to perfect the color and ensure long-lasting results.

Fuller Lips, No Fillers Needed

One of the biggest advantages of lip blushing is its ability to enhance the natural beauty of your lips while requiring minimal maintenance. Lip blushing can create the illusion of fuller lips without the need for fillers or other invasive procedures. By strategically tattooing pigment to define the lip borders and add subtle shading, a skilled artist can create the appearance of plumper, more youthful lips that look entirely natural.

Is Lip Blushing Right For You?

Lip blushing is safe for most individuals. But those with certain medical conditions or skin sensitivities might want to steer clear of it. The PMU artist will go over any contraindications or concerns at your consultation to ensure it’s a good fit for you.
